Gulf Specialty Steel Industries(GSSI) located in Oman initially uses a conventional lighting system. The company aims to reduce their energy and maintenance cost through higher energy-efficient lightings.

The Climate of Oman can be described as subtropical dry, hot desert climate with low annual rainfall, very high temperatures in summer and a big difference between maximum and minimum temperatures, espicially in the inland areas. With such tough environmental conditions, one of the stringent requirement is that the proposed Hi-bay lightings must reliably operate in the 55deg ambient temperature.

With a long service life of more than 50,000 hours at high ambient temperatures, the proposed Hi-bay lightings are targeted to operate for more than 12 years. Apart from consuming lower energy, the lightings also significantly reduced maintenance cost by having less or no requirement for spares, lessening the manpower used and shortening the factory’s down time in replacing burnt lamps.

In 2013, GSSI is possibly the first factory in Oman to be completely illuminated with energy-efficient LED lightings, saving up to 49% of energy and providing a better illumination additionally.
